Condolence: Dear Barb and all of Sandy Hertel's family,

I am one of Sandy's friends from high school. We both spent many hours in the art room and that's where I came to know her.
I've lived in New York for many years, but was so happy to connect with Sandy through Facebook about a dozen years ago. I had grown up sewing (my mom was a professional dressmaker) so Sandy's shop was especially enticing for me when I visited Buffalo. She had such beautiful fabrics, such good taste, and also, I learned, had acquired really great business skills. It also was apparent how much she cared about her city and that she got involved as much as she could to preserve its architecture and its livablility. I so admired that. Her politics and mine matched as well and we shared our doubts and our hopes for surviving this period of turmoil. But there's surviving... and then there's actual surviving...

Like so many, I am shocked and so saddened by her passing. Though we shared our personal cancer fighting stories over the years, she kept so much of her struggles to herself. She was such a hard worker, such a fighter, such a force, it's hard to believe anything could beat her.

I realize my story, my relationship with Sandy, is one of probably hundreds. For you, her family, it must be devastating to lose her. I'm sending my deepest sympathies to you.

I will always remember her.

Sincerely,
Susan
