Frank Peter Malone, 89, died on Monday July 22, 2013 at Hospice Buffalo following a brief illness. A proud first-generation Italian-American, he was born in North Tonawanda. Frank was the fifth of eight siblings. Shortly after his graduation from North Tonawanda High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force. He was promoted to Sergeant and served during WWII in the Pacific Theater. Frank was awarded the Purple Heart for surviving a Kamikaze attack on the SS Thomas Nelson.
Upon returning to civilian life, he joined the North Tonawanda Police Department. In 1951 and graduated from the Erie Community College with a degree in Criminal Justice. Frank rose through the ranks of the Police Department and was appointed Chief of Police in 1971. He retired on July 25th 1985.
Frank was a lifetime member of the New York State Association of Chiefs of Police, the American Legion Post 264, the Ganson Street Tigers and the Renaissance Club. In his retirement, he enjoyed golfing, traveling and gardening but most importantly, spending time with his family. He was a devoted and tireless friend to the many who encircled his life; he lived by the simple motto of helping others “any time – any place.” Brother of the late Violet Sheldon; James Maloni, Woody Malone, Sue Giardino and Raymond Malone.
Beloved husband of 66 years to Helen (nee Carlo)Malone . Devoted father of Peg (Ronald) Toski and Patricia (Thomas) Foels. Cherished grandfather of Judith (Todd) Welsh and Sara Foels (Brian Servicki). Proud great-grandfather of Samantha Welsh. Dear brother of Teresa (James) DiBernardo and Mary Camarda. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Friends received by the family on Wednesday 7-9 and Thursday 2-4 and 7-9 PM at the Brunner Funeral Home (692-3841) 156 Robison St., North Tonawanda. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday morning at 10:00 AM at St. Jude the Apostle Parish, 800 Niagara Falls Blvd. in North Tonawanda. (Please assemble at the church)
